ABOUT

John is a UK based TV & film composer, with 18 years of experience in the industry.

Born in Oregon and raised in Berlin, John traded his beloved hometown for the slightly wetter climes of Scotland in 2003, studying theatre production and later Sound Design at Edinburgh University.

Led by a lifelong passion for sound, kickstarted by his parents’ record collection and all manner of 80s children’s TV soundtracks, John developed his craft through various band projects and solitary experimentation with instruments, cassette multitracks and eventually more modern technology. He started writing music for documentaries while completing his Sound Design MSc at Edinburgh, then moving on to television and film and has somehow avoided a proper job ever since.

For the past eighteen years John has been scoring countless documentary features, series, animations and commercials for the UK’s biggest production companies, networks and streamers, while also carving out a space for more collaborative & performative projects and his own instrumental solo work since 2013, with which he occasionally performs live as well.

Some of John’s biggest credits to date include series such as the award-winning ‘Inside Claridge’s‘ (BBC2) and ‘Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds‘ (C4), ‘The Five Billion Pound Super Sewer‘ (BBC2), ‘The Undateables‘ (C4), ‘The Midwives‘ (BBC2), ‘Generation Porn‘ (C4) or ‘Our Cops In The North’ (BBC2).

His most recent feature length scores are for Marie Lidén’s BAFTA nominated documentary ‘Electric Malady’ (Aconite Productions 2022) and the RTS Scotland award winning ‘Janey‘ (Hopscotch Films 2024) while John’s most recent doc series are ‘Rise Of The Billionaires‘ (Paramount+ 2022), ‘House Of Kardashian‘ (Sky 2023) and ‘Special Forces: Most Daring Missions‘ (Paramount+ 2024).

Working in London, Berlin and Scotland, he is currently based in sunny Glasgow.
